<itunes:subtitle>The world's first radio show dedicated to anti-aging, human performance, fitness and nutrition</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>Super Human Radio is the world's first broadcast radio show dedicated to anti-aging, human performance, fitness and nutrition. We discuss topics that are taboo for other radio shows like the benefits of anabolic steroids, anti-aging medicine, raw food eating and much more. The show airs weekly on various radio stations throughout the US. Host Carl Lanore is possibly the most knowledgeable about the subject matter and is constantly praised by experts and guest who see him more as a peer than a talking head. The show is fast moving and entertaining while addressing some very scientific subjects and making it easy for everyone to understand.</itunes:summary>

:: The Answer To Sugar Substitutes :: Guest: Karen Rysavy :: What's better than a truly 0 calorie sweetener that tastes great? One that also adds fiber to your diet! Fiber Fit has a gram of soluble fiber (the good fiber) in each serving and aside from the carbs derived from the fiber, it is completely calorie and carb free - at any amount. You see most sugar substitutes say that 1 serving is 0 calories and 0 carbs, but once you begin to go above single serving the calories and carbs start to add up - quickly! On top of that it has no terrible aftertaste and can be used in recipes and cooks well. Now you can have a cup of coffee with almost as much soluble fiber as a serving of oatmeal. :: Strategies To Help You Keep Your New Year's Resolution :: Guest: Elizabeth Scott MS :: Tactics and suggestions to help you stay on track - you can never get enough of this type of motivation.
Resident Super Human Radio therapist Elizabeth Scott has lots to offer if you're beginning to get discouraged or just need a little emotional boost to hit that target. Lanore chimes in with some of his personal favorites that have lasted the test of time as well. ::

:: ENCORE PRESENTATION - Power Eating :: Guest: Dr. Susan Kleiner :: I first discovered the book Power Eating in 2001. I had forgotten that I used the book daily for about 2 years to plan my meals as I made my strength journey. I remember that I made some of my best non-drug progress when I was eating according to the Power eating plan. I discussed the protocols detailed in the book with Dr. Kleiner. The recently released third edition is even more comprehensive of a book. Dr. Kleiner talked about target caloric intake, the importance of carbohydrates and their impact on strength, and the fallacies of a low fat diet. We discussed eating for strength for both men and women. Modern diets are counter productive to strength gains and most athletes don't eat enough calories to make consistent gains. Also discussed was proper nutrition and its role in manifesting a sense of well being that translates to mood and strength consistency. With an ever increasing concern for aesthetics in powerlifters and strength athletes in general, bodybuilders can benefit from the Power Eating program as Dr. Kleiner has included modified meal plans to address aesthetics as well as the beginner/novice trainer. Power Eating is a must read book for any athlete. Its guidelines are based upon scientific evidence and subsequently are rooted in common sense practices. Sections of the book cover supplements, herbs as well as specific food group choices. This is a very complete and well thought out book and worth the $17 it costs. Dr. Kleiner warned that there are still copies of the second edition on book shelves and to be sure that you are buying the most current third edition. ::

:: Melatonin, It's Not What You Think It Is :: Guest: Dr. Russell Reiter :: Dr. Reiter is direct and succinct when answering questions about this amazing hormone - melatonin. He has spent over 36 years and has been involved in over 700 peer reviewed studies about the subject. It is so much more than just a sleep aid. It is chemo protective, immune system boosting and quite possibly the single best antioxidant that you can take bar none. It is clearly the most effective when it comes to protecting the brain as well as many other critical organs. It has been shown in numerous studies to defer the onset of senility and age related oxidative stress of the brain. Physiological levels peak around the first decade of life and gradually decline as we age. The initial decline heralds puberty in humans. Shift worker as well as those over 40 can benefit the most from supplementing with melatonin. Melatonin has a direct effect on ATP stores and energy output. There is a special value for those suffering from, or at risk of Type 2 Diabetes. Also it may be a supplement of choice for those with hyperthyroidism or taking thyroid medications as it acts directly on the thyroid as well as the organs most often damaged by hyperthyroid hormone levels including the eyes and heart. Melatonin's effects on other hormones such as sex steroids are covered. Methods of protecting your natural levels of melatonin as well as foods that are naturally high in melatonin are discussed. Supplementation with OTC melatonin, dosing and timing is also covered as well as maintenance and therapeutic dosing. This is a must-listen-to episode for everyone. ::

:: When Muscles Fail To Grow :: Guest: Dr. Jeffrey Willardson :: While training till muscular failure is not required to make gains in strength, it may be the best way to make gains in hypertrophy - if done properly. The most productive rep schemes are offered by Dr. Willardson as well as an example of the training periods that should be used to make the best gains with the least potential for overtraining. :: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome And Its Relationship To Sleep Quality :: Guest: Paul Becker :: Most chronic fatigue syndromes list sleep disturbances as a symptom. Becker's company funded a sleep study to see if PEMF's in-fact, have the ability to lull people into the deepest stages of sleep. An unexpected byproduct was its effects on a Fibromyalgia patient. ::

:: The Anabolic Effects Of Protein As We Age :: Guest: Dr. T. Brock Symons :: Fear not, protein has the same anabolic effect in older adults as it does in younger adults. Dr. Symons described the research study he authored and the astounding truths about protein digestion and metabolism. The result are not what were expected. :: The Difference Between Body-Building And Bodybuilding :: Guest: Lee Labrada :: I may sound a bit like a zealot during this interview, but I'm passionate about this subject. Labrada kept me anchored with his level-headed approach. Labrada and I discuss the real factors that make one a body-builder. Its the daily choices and not the size of your guns. My hope is that more people will come to realize that they ARE body-builders and begin to identify themselves as such. This was a fun interview! ::

:: For Whom The Kettlebell Tolls :: Guest: Pavel Tsatsouline :: Russian Kettlebell training can help you build strength. From Powerlifters to Football players any sports discipline can benefit form the Kettlebell. Only six basic movements performed with the Kettlebell in concert with the ballistic style of the movements and the compactness of the Kettlebell itself may make this the ideal training method for anyone who is short on time and training space.:: Turn Up The Heat On Hypertrophy :: Guest: Dr. Joshua Selsby :: Applying heat to the trained muscle - before training and after - can elicit an anabolic response due to the up-regulation of Heat Shock Proteins which stimulate an aggressive increase in Growth Factors. Modes of application, target temperatures and potential methods of generating the needed heat are discussed.::

:: Big Pharma Hi-jacks hGH :: Guest: Anthony Roberts :: Roberts and I discuss the coincidental timing of the FDA's decision to loosen the reins on Adult Growth Hormone Deficiency prescriptions, the reference to the the hGH market growing to a 2.9 billion dollar industry by several stake-holding pharmaceutical companies and the recent embargo of hGH from China. One can easily speculate that Big Pharma is protecting its interest in this large and profitable segment.
:: Never Mind The Xenoestrogens, Here's The Sex Phthalates :: Guest: Dr. Matthew P. Hardy :: Phthalates are even more ubiquitous than Xenoestrogens and readily leach from plastics without needing to be heated. Dr. Hardy, a research scientist with the Population Council, has dedicated much time to understanding the effects of Phthalates on reproduction and testosterone production in men. Phthalates are considered an antiandrogen and have potentially severe consequences as are detailed in this interview. ::

:: The Importance Of Lab Tests :: Guest: Dr. David Zava :: He discussed the importance of testing while supplementing with OTC hormones like DHEA and pregnenolone. Equally important is testing while using anabolic steroids as not all people respond the same to supraphysiologic doses. ZRT offers both saliva and blood spot testing from the comfort of your own home. Tests include complete thyroid panels, male and female hormone panels, IGF-1 and many more. The ZRT website also has a fantastic resource center and hormone education center which offer a wide variety of useful information. Guest: Brian Smith Smith called in from the Masters Mr. America competition in Pittsburgh PA where he is a competitor to give us an update on his status. At the time he said he had felt that he was in a good position. After speaking with today he ended up with a second place (to Ronnie Coleman's training partner). A great accomplishment for a fellow who had more than his fair share of obstacles. Congratulations to Brian Smith!::

:: 9 Steps To Productive Training :: Guest: Jimmy Smith CSCS :: Smith lays out important considerations when planning and executing your exercise and training routine.
Most important - have plan and stick to it. Don't get trapped by obstacles like a piece of equipment not being available. Be ready to swap exercises or have alternate exercises to perform. Supplement wisely. And when in doubt - do less - not more. Much more is covered during the interview. You can download a complete copy of the 9 Steps To Productive Training here http://www.superhumanradio.com/core/shows/show07142007.htm#9steps . Also I covered a recent study that confirms the benefits of Capsaicin as a fat burner. ::

:: Eating Like A Cave Man - The Paleo Diet Explored :: Guest: Dr. Loren Cordain :: This diet just makes sense. Plenty of protein, lots of veggies , fruits and healthy fats. But its much more than just that. The way we ate before we became civilized is the way we were genetically designed to eat. Dr. Cordain was very generous with the information he offered. He discussed the importance of regulating the PH of the body when eating a high protein diet by adding specific vegetables and fruits which have been shown to have base shifting effect. Science has shown that a PH leaning more towards base and away from acidic is anabolic. Also discussed was the importance of the proper Omega 6 to Omega 3 ratios and its effects on reducing inflammation which many athletes suffer from. Dr. Cordain offers a large assortment of nutritional tools on his website - www.thepaleodiet.com - that are free to the public. These include base -vs - acidic foods, Omega 3 rich foods, Paleo Recipes and much more. The website is worth a visit and a bookmark if not only for the free tools generously offered. ::

:: Protein The Way Nature Intended It :: Guest: Dr. Aajonus Vonderplanitz :: While many people might be repulsed by the possibilities of eating raw beef or eggs, there seems to be a growing consensus that nature intended man to eat protein this way. Prehistoric man did not arrive with a desire for cooked meat. As Dr. Vonderplanitz points out - charred meat was most likely a results of a forest fire or lightning strike. Civilized man probably found that cooked meats didn't smell as bad. Needless to say - pre-historic man ate raw meat and survived long enough to evolve into what we are today. Dr. Vonderplanitz discussed how he came to understand this truth. He also pays tribute to Dr. Francis Pottinger - one of the founding fathers of Native Nutrition. Suggestions for those who are interested in adding raw meats and eggs to their diet are provided. How to choose meats and eggs suitable for raw eating as well as some misconceptions about how the body digest raw versus cooked meats are discussed. Dr. Vonderplanitz also discussed the value of raw milk - a favorite subject of mine - as well as the continuing fight to have legislature loosened so that family farms can provide raw milk easily to their neighbors. After listening to the show myself I noticed that I had injected - perhaps too often - some of my own experiences as a child and eating raw foods. Growing up in a first generation Italian-America household I saw my father and grand parents regularly eat raw meats, eggs and cheeses. In fact after speaking with my sister about this episode she informed me that our mother used to put a raw egg in our baby bottles along with the milk. My hope is that you will listen to this episode with an open mind. Those who would like to learn more about Native Nutrition can visit www.wewant2live.com . ::

:: Flex Wheeler Is Back In The Game :: Guest: Flex Wheeler - IFBB Pro Bodybuilder :: Flex Wheeler has overcome setbacks before. A car accident at 170 miles per hour right before the 1994 Olympia that would have killed most, a rare kidney disease and eventually kidney transplant surgery. Now he's about to reenter competitive bodybuilding - completely natural. Flex talks about his genetic gift - as a myostatin null human being. He discusses whether performance enhancing drugs contributed to his kidney disease. He has recently become affiliated with All American EFX (http://www.aaefx.com) and signed an agreement that he can be spot tested at any time to confirm that he is using ONLY natural supplements during his body transformation. When I asked if we would see him on a natural bodybuilding stage in the near future, he indicated that he is very loyal to the IFBB and he would most likely compete at the IFBB level. We wish him all the success in the world and hope to see him on stage soon. ::

:: Mike Miller Changes Careers :: Guest: Mike Miller Elite Powerlifter :: Guest: Mary Lesser - Magna Pharmacuticals :: Miller is not only a great athlete but also very down-to-earth individual. His world record breaking squat of 1220 pounds in 2006 created a buzz in Powerlifting that still continues today (http://www.superhumanradio.com/core/shows/show06092007.htm#miller). Now Miller has set his sights on the world of Professional Wrestling. If he does to wrestling what he did in Powerlifting, we're sure to see lots of him throwing down with some of the best in the WWE. We learned that he attributes his strength, drive and work ethic to growing up on a dairy farm. He's also a huge fan of raw milk (I knew I liked this guy). His career change has him training like a bodybuilder which has earned him a new found respect for bodybuilders. He concedes that building muscle and not adding body fat is a real science. He continues to make contributions to the sport of Powerlifting with the anticipated release of his ESP Training System DVD which summarizes his training philosophy and protocols that allowed him to reach elite status. You can get more info on the ESP System by emailing Mike Miller at ragewxw@gmail.com . He will make his debut as a WWE wrestler soon and is sure to win over the fans with his superhuman strength. We wish him and his family all the success in the world. :: Lesser came back on the show to give us an update on their Z-Slim product and some new web offers that can be found at www.magna4u.com . ::

:: MMA - vs- Marshal Arts :: Guest: Sufi Mike Marshall :: Special Guest: Rick Velez - Elite Fitness :: Sifu Mike Marshall discusses a recent article that he is having published in an International Kung Fu magazine which has caused a variety of opinions. Sifu Marshall has blamed the recent rise in popularity of the MMA sport for contributing to unrealistic expectations of student to want to learn all there is to know about a particular fighting style in just a few short months. :: Velez came on the show to make a special announcement but couldn't help chiming in on what Sifu Marshall had to say. Velez a long time student of Marshal Arts and trains at an MMA gym himself had contrasting opinions. The special announcement was made that I, Carl Lanore, have agreed to host the new Elite Fitness radio show which will begin airing in July 2007.
:: Andropause... Need I Say More :: Guest: Judy Minogue R. Ph :: When discussing Andropause, the focus is mainly on waning testosterone levels. Not on this episode. We covered multi-hormone protocols that address all of the aging males issues. Hormones are like the instruments in an orchestra. Replacing one without consideration to the others is akin to having the tuba playing too loud and drowning out the string section. It about much more than just rubbing on some testosterone gel and calling it a day.::

:: Hello Boys and Girls.. Its the Porter Cottrell Show :: Guest: Porter Cottrell - IFBB Professional Bodybuilder :: Porter Cottrell is an amazing athlete and human being. He answered ALL questions straight forward and with no hesitation. We covered what attracted him to bodybuilding, what led up to his departure from professional bodybuilding. Porter talked about his training split and nutrition as well as set and rep schemes that he used while a competitor. He also discussed his feelings about training to failure as well as the importance of isometric movements to increase pain tolerance. He also discussed what he does now to stay in amazing shape. We talked specifically about how he developed his amazing back, what his favorite body part is, his competition measurements as well as his current measurements. There was a lot of discussion throughout the interview about the various chemicals Porter used during his professional career. The conversation really got interesting when Porter detailed the anabolic steroid cycle he used for his first Olympia competition. This has to be a broadcast radio first! I was amazed to learn Porter's caloric intake during his professional career. It was contrary to what I had believed it to be. Porter talked about an event in '97 that caused him to rethink his pre-contest nutrition that was the result of a conversation he had with Lee Labrada two years earlier in Madrid. He attributed this change to the contribution of greater muscle mass in the years to come. Porter also revealed something amazing about his supplement use during his pro career. This is a great interview. Porter is a passionate person about physical culture. His continued contribution to health and fitness is his greatest gift. ::

:: Super Human Radio Exclusive - Folstaxan... The FreakMaker :: Guest: Rick Green :: Since its discovery in 1997, the athletic and strength community have dreamed of a way to block Myostatin in order to make supernatural gains in muscle and strength. In the past, supplements that proved to block or bind Myostatin in a Petri dish didn't translate their effects to their human subjects. This may be due in part to the fact that past over-the-counter Myostatin blockers were fungal in nature and the digestive track seems to be able to readily break down these fungi and render them ineffective. Enter Celldyne Biopharma. After two years of development they are ready to release Folstaxan - a specific group of proteins isolated from fertilized chicken egg yolk which in one study done on healthy humans, reduced Myostatin by 37% after just one dose! Folstaxan appears to elevate Follistatin which in several peer reviewed studies has been shown to reduce circulating Myostatin. Follistatin regulates Follicle Stimulating Hormone and subsequently "Folstaxan should not be used by ovulating women" advised Green, due to the potential disruption of a normal menstrual cycle. Green explained that two new studies are about to begin to identify how a 37% reduction in Myostatin translates to muscle growth. This is unclear at this time. However, if one looks at the available scientific data you can conclude that any reduction in Myostatin should enhance both hypertrophy and strength. How much remains to be seen. It appears that the the top bodybuilders may be genetically predisposed to produce little or no Myostatin. One such athlete, Kenneth "Flex" Wheeler was identified as having one of the rarest types of Myostatin mutation of any human. He also had one of the freakiest physiques before retiring from bodybuilding due to unrelated health issues. A recent study published by John Hopkins University showed that Myostatin does not effect cardiac muscle which has given an even greater sense of relief to those wanting to use Myostatin blockers. Perhaps a reduction in Myostatin is the missing link in the varying degrees that athletes respond to anabolic steroids. Some can do as little as half a gram a week and have remarkable results while other do four times as much and see very little in the way of gains. Scientific data shows that hypertrophy appears to have a push-pull relationship between three molecules. On one side Insulin-like Growth Factor -1 and Mechano Growth Factor which stimulates muscle growth and on the other side Myostatin which negatively regulates it. This leads one to believe that stacking Growth Hormone with a Myostatin blocker like Folstaxan would prove to be very useful. For those interested in taking the 100% over-the-counter approach - stacking Creatine + Bovine Colostrum + Folstaxan may be the next best thing. Folstaxan may be the ideal supplement to level the playing field so that all athletes can appear to be genetically gifted. Deliveries of Folstaxan should begin in 4 to 6 weeks, however don't wait to long to place your order. Green admitted that the process of manufacturing Folstaxan is quite protracted and intricate. Their first production run will only produce enough Folstaxan for 1000 jugs of the powder. Each jug will contain enough for a one month supply based upon the recommended daily dose. Folstaxan is sure to be back-ordered quickly. Finally with a supplement that reduces circulating Myostatin in humans by 37% after a single dose - The possibility of seeing the next generation of 400 pound ripped-to-the-bone freaks may just be around the corner. You can learn more about Folstaxan by visiting www.folstaxan.com ::

:: The Thin Line Between Performance And Health :: Guest: Dr. Raymond Francis :: The balance between health and performance extremes can be maintained through proper nutrition, rest and most of all - quenching free radicals. Antioxidants can aid in preventing damage to DNA and the telomere. Preventing DNA damage will allow hard training athletes to avoid illness and disease. Not all antioxidants are created equal however. It was assumed that adequate vitamin A, C and E intake was all that was needed. It turns out that high intake of Ascorbic Acid may actually contribute to oxidation according to Dr. Francis. This is due partly to the type of vitamin C we are getting. It is L-Ascorbate that is the biologically active form. Ascorbic Acid is made up 50% of L-Ascrobate and the balance is a type of vitamin C that may actually contribute to inflammation and cellular irritation. Dr. Francis explained the concept detailed in his book - Never Be Sick Again - which proposes that all disease comes from one of two challenges on a cellular level - deficiency and toxicity. Giving you body what it needs in the way of nutrients, water and rest in concert with eliminating toxic waste will keep your cells healthy.::

:: Old Tricks, New Dog - Big Beyond Belief Revisited :: Guest: Leo Costa Jr.:: Big Beyond Belief continues to be an important contribution to the American bodybuilding landscape. At the time of its introduction, some 10 years ago, the concepts and training strategies detailed in the book where contradictory to what was considered common knowledge. Shorter training sessions, training a particular body part with greater frequency and in some cases, training twice a day, were all touted as sure ways to over train and stop making progress. Detractors of the book told their cohorts to beware of these training methods. Now in its third revision printing and 10 years later the book has withstood the test of time. Thousands of disciples have reaped rewards by following the edicts of Big Beyond Belief. Costa explains how the opportunity first materialized to visit the Bulgarian Weightlifting Team. Also discussed are the variables of training laid out in the book, the importance of resting immediately after training and the importance of using free weights and compound movements. Costa has since begun a new venture opening personal training facilities around the country called Guaranteed Fitness. As the name indicates, a money back guaranty is offered to the client should they not reach their desired goal.
These facilities are geared more towards the middle-of-the-road average person wanting to obtain peak health and fitness. At the core of his new business are the precepts detailed in Big Beyond Belief which have been slightly modified to fit his more mainstream clientele.::

:: Look mom... No Appetite! :: Guest: Mary Lesser :: Pinolenic Acid is a polyunsaturated fatty acid that has a variety of benefits. The most significant being as an appetite suppressant. We learned that the Korean Pine Nut is the most abundant species of Pinolenic Acid. Once this PUFA is digested, it increases the presences of two hormones - cholecystokinin (CCK) and glucagon-like peptide (GLP-1). CCK and GLP-1 are usually produced by the stomach in the later stages of digestion. They signal to the brain a sense of fullness - and hence the appetite suppressing effects. Pinolenic Acid raises CCK by 60% and GLP-1by 25% for up to 4 hours at a time and has been show in human studies to reduce hunger and caloric consumption by as much as 60%. Pinolenic Acid also slows gastric emptying and may be an aid with high carbohydrate meals. Subjects using Pinolenic Acid seem to see consistent and similar weight loss patterns over time of use. Bodybuilders can use Pinolenic Acid during a cutting phase. Strength athletes trying to make weight can also benefit form it as it will help stave off feeling of huger while on a hypo-caloric diet. Pinolenic Acid also has a couple other benefits. Unlike many other appetite suppressants, it has been show to lower blood pressure with use and also lower LDL cholesterol through an up regulation of LDL receptor site in the liver. Pinolenic Acid is currently being sold by Magna Pharmaceuticals under the product name Z-Slim. You can learn more about it by visiting www.magna4u.com . We're sure to hear more about this wonderful PUFA in upcoming months. ::

:: Seeing The Bigger Picture - Sustainable Strength Gains :: Guest: Wade Johnson :: Wade Johnson is living proof that you can continue to get stronger, without limitation, as you age. At 41 years old and drug free, he continues to add weight to all of his lifts and is stronger today than a year ago or a decade ago. Having realistic expectations is a foundation for building strength for a lifetime. Wade teaches his clients that a plan with both realistic short term and long term goals is critical. This allows the athlete to see the bigger picture. You have to have a plan. Staying on the plan keeps us from unnecessary injury and that allows us to continue to gain strength without dramatic interruption. Acknowledging that progress is not a straight line, its also critical to stay in the gym even when you can't give it your all. The only bad workout is a missed workout, and in Wade's own words - "if all you've got is 80% to give, then give 100% of that 80%". We all find ourselves distracted by life, jobs and lack of energy. Getting to the gym and training, no matter how light the intensity, keep us on track. Patience combined with hard goals makes for lifelong strength gains. Performance enhancing drugs may give a period of strength gains, however once the athlete ceases use it becomes very hard to maintain the gains and disappointment and frustration may keep you out of the gym. Wade attributes his lack of drug use with his ability to keep making gains at a realistic pace and with long term benefits. Those wanting to communicate with Wade Johnson to get his help and advice can contact him at supersquat800@yahoo.com or visit his website at www.weightliftingdiscussion.com ::

:: Pre-workout Drinks :: Guest: Sebastian Balcombe :: Pre-workout drinks are much more sophisticated than simply caffeinated drinks. A properly designed pre-workout drink should enhance both physical and mental ability to exercise and compete. The can add intensity and focus while supporting proper nervous system function. We discussed some of the key ingredients in a pre-workout drink. The importance of simple cabs to ward off cortisol. Branch chain amino acids to support muscle energy, reduce central nervous system fatigue and maintain an anabolic environment. Also supporting precursors to aid in both central and peripheral nervous system operation which enhances both recruitment of muscle as well as helping to reduce fatigue. Of all the supplements available, pre-workout drinks may require a user to find their own "dose" unique to them. Dialing in a drink and its amount that works is critical. One should not feel jittery or over-stimulated. What works for one my not work for another. Finding the lowest effective dose is important. ::

:: Power Eating :: Guest: Dr. ::

:: Resurrecting The Renaissance Bodybuilder :: Co-Host: Porter Cottrell - Guest: Dan Lurie :: Dan Lurie has an amazing memory and still has passion for the sport which he contributed to so much of his life. Having him on with Porter Cottrell was interesting to say the least. To men passionate about bodybuilding but with very different experiences. One thing they both agreed on is the abandon of common sense as it relates to health that current competitors practice. Another was Steve Reeves as a physical ideal that they both admired. In fact Cottrell revealed that is was his childhood dream to look like Reeves when at eight years of age he saw his first Hercules movie. Needless to say that he achieved that dream. Things got a little tense when we began to talk about anabolic steroids. Clearly Lurie carries a lot of pain in his heart about athletes turning to drugs to compete. On the other side of the table is Cottrell who has had some past experience with performance enhancing drugs. While everyone maintained their composure, it was clear that we disagreed about some points. In the end you can not deny Lurie's contribution to the sport and it was with that spirit of admiration and respect that Cottrell and I remained throughout the interview. I am so fortunate to be the host of this show and to have had an opportunity to talk with these two men separated by a generation yet so closely connected by a passion for bodybuilding. ::

:: Exclusive: Craig Titus Audio Tapes From Jail :: Guest: Glenn Puit - Criminal Justice Reporter and True Crime Author :: Many of us have forgotten about the Craig Titus - Kelly Ryan murder trial. A lot of time has passed since they were first accused of the murder of Melissa James, their live-in personal assistant. Bail has been denied, the trial is supposed to begin in the next couple months, however rumors are that the defense will attempt to postpone the trial in an effort to be better prepared. The prosecutor is ready now. And the evidence is strong. It would be foolish to attempt to predict the outcome of the trial. Anything can happen. Glenn Puit is possibly the most knowledgeable about the events surrounding the case. His recently published book - Fire In The Desert - is an evidentiary detailed record of the facts about the case. He shared his observations and some of the less-known facts about the case with me. Excerpts of four taped phone conversations between Dean Cassim - the informant - Nelson Brady Jr. and Craig Tutus were played for the first time on broadcast radio. Several people closest to the case claim these phone calls are about a murder-for-hire plot to eliminate three potential witnesses for the prosecution. Brady has already been arrested and accused of trying to hire the hit-man, who was actually an undercover detective. Titus has not been accused yet. You can make your own decision. ::

:: The Secret Behind The Z-Health System :: Guest: Dr. Eric Cobb :: At the core of the Z-Health System is a method of exercise and movement that pushes the Central and Peripheral Nervous System to learn, re-learn and adapt to being stronger and faster. Simple, yet confounding flaws in each of our individual kinesthetics is the source of not hitting our genetically assigned potential. These flaws, some from previous injuries and others erroneously learned early on, can be removed giving way to new gains in strength, speed and explosive power. This is very intriguing. Especially since I had admittedly discounted the whole "Mobility" segment as being not much more than a fancy way to warm up before the real exercise occurs. I was very wrong. Dr. Cobb explains how the deliberate and familiar yet very special movements he teaches can increase neuro-muscular efficiency. The end results is reaching our own individual personal best. Dr. Cobb simplified the concept and used several analogies that crystallize this concept. Z-Health can benefit every sport and exercise discipline. Any athlete can benefit from Dr. Cobb's teachings. Professional coaches can become certified in the Z-Health method and pass this training on to the athletes they train. This is a must-listen-to episode. Especially if you, like I, didn't see the real value in mobility training or the importance of postural and range-of-motion functionality.

:: Topical Spot Fat Reduction Products Explored - Guest: Scott Ferguson - MP Technologies - Topical spot fat reduction is a reality for those who are looking to eliminate fat deposits in specific areas. Ferguson discusses penetration enhancers, active ingredients as wells as whether or not to cycle use of these products. Results are seen rapidly for most individuals and side effects are relatively modest - if at all - for those individuals who appear to have a sensitivity. We learned that some folks use these products to avoid fat storage and to stay lean as well as to rid themselves of fat in those troubled areas. One area to apply these products that I didn't think of is under the neck to give the face a more streamlined appearance and rid one of the double-chin. These products are especially effective in estrogen-related fat storage such as the hips, thighs and buttocks and in the chest, especially in men who suffer from gynecomastia. Ferguson addressed why there is skepticism about this category of products citing disappointment with the performance of some early-introduced products due to under-dosed or missing active ingredients. ::

:: The Uber Herb - Ginger is possibly the most important herb to add to your supplement arsenal. It has so many benefits that I dedicated a whole episode to it. As a super antioxidant - some 50 of the 115 different compounds found in ginger are some of the most potent antioxidants that are free-radical specific as well as help raise SOD levels naturally. As an anti-inflammatory - gingerol and paradol have been shown to be stronger analgesics than aspirin and 6-gingerol has been shown to dramatically reduce COX-2 expression better than resveratrol or tumeric. As an ergogenic - 6-gingerol and 6-paradol have been shown to significantly raise adrenal hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine, increase energy expenditure upwards of 21% and increase thermogenesis. As a chemo-protective - several of the gingerols have been shown to protect against a variety of cancers including pancreatic and prostate, arrest leukemia cells and reduce and eliminate tumor growth. Ginger has been shown to protect the liver and aid in resisting kidney damage and failure. Protect the lining of the stomach. Eliminate nausea and motion sickness. Eliminate joint pain. The potential testosterone elevating effects are also discussed by reducing aromatase enzyme biosynthesis through the P450 Cytochrome cascade. How to choose a ginger supplement is discussed as well as dosing. As a single supplement no other supplement comes close to the variety of benefits provided by ginger. ::

:: Soldiers. They stand ready in peak mental and physical condition. Ready to be deployed anywhere in the world to protect our freedom. This is the single greatest sacrifice anyone could make. A soldier is part athlete and part warrior. The athlete needs all the same things that any athlete needs to perform - a way to train and stay in physical condition and proper nutrition. Yet once a soldier is deployed they have neither. Their conditioning and health suffers quickly - at a time that they need to depend upon their bodies and minds they are stripped of the essentials. Sgt. Nathanael Morrison discussed the unique needs for both strength and endurance training. He suggested the use of simple items such as sand bags to perform quick strength routines while Ian Edgar illustrated some of the 100 different exercise that can be performed using a standard issue duffle bag. Nutrition was also covered with a highlight on the lack of adequate protein for soldiers once deployed. Strategies for increasing proper nutrition were discussed. Towards the end a "short-list" of essential supplements to help soldiers maintain health, strength and stamina while deployed was listed and discussed. ::

:: Guests:Porter Cottrell IFBB Pro Bodybuilder and Personal Trainer- Stephanie Jones NPC Fitness-Figure Competitor and Personal Trainer - Staying On Track For The Holiday - Hopefully all of you will find this show as motivating and energizing as I did. Both Porter Cottrell and Stephanie Jones made great arguments for staying focused and on track for the holidays. The illusion that we need to be myopic and focus solely of the next few weeks of festivity is a misassumption. Staying tuned into your long term health and fitness goals needs to be the focus to help you make it through this distracting and potentially progress derailing period. Several important factor were discusses including - using the holidays as an excuse to abandon your program, well-meaning family and friends who will try and coax you to "loosen up" even though this is contrary to your real desire, the lack of planning meals, feelings of stress around the holidays and the "moment of pleasure for weeks of pain" exchange that must be identified to help stay motivated and on track. The holidays don't have to be like a wave that carries away months of progress. You can enjoy yourself and stay on track at the same time. Moderation is the key. ::

:: Central and Peripheral Nervous System Adaptation and Recovery - Guest: Kelly Baggett- Coach, Author and Sports Consultant - CNS development and adaptation are at the root of all strength gains, regardless of sports discipline. Baggett points out the ideal known as Absolute Strength where all muscle fibers are recruited and 100% of potential strength is executed. However most people only use about half of their strength and the limiting factor is the nervous system. Understanding how to manipulate the nervous system is paramount for any athlete. Baggett details clearly the why's and how's of central and peripheral nervous system fatigue. He has developed metrics for measuring neural fatigue that will help athletes create sensible training programs that will speed strength gains and not slow them. Baggett also identifies specific steps that can be taken to offset fatigue and create an environment for nervous system adaptation and recovery including exercise timing. Discussion of a sample routine to replace the traditional split routines adopted by many are given for an athlete that is interested in making better strength gains. Baggett shows how organizing nervous system low drain movements with high drain movements can be accomplished to allow an athlete to train daily yet fully recover. Baggett also draws the parallel between chronic fatigue syndromes such as Fibromyalgia and the components he has identified that aid in making better strength gains though CNS development. These techniques may quite possibly be adoptable for those who suffer from fatigue related auto-immune disease to gently nudge their nervous systems back in a more resilient direction. A copy of a 6 page article authored by Baggett which makes clear this concept of nervous system development and details the metrics needed to create your own routine can be received by following the link http://www.superhumanradio.com/core/shows/show12022006.htm#baggett ::

:: Caring For Your Liver and Optimum Blood Glucose Levels - Guest: Chuck Rudolph - MEd. RD - The liver is possibly the most important and resilient organ in the human body. Unlike any other organ, it multi-tasks between filtering the toxins out of our blood, stores large amounts of blood, vitamins, minerals and glycogen, converts simple sugars to glucose, converts proteins to glucose in the absence of sugars, converts proteins and carbohydrates to fats, synthesizes blood cells, cholesterol, lipoproteins and triglycerides. Wow, that's a lot of work. We learned that the liver has the ability to regenerate from as little as 25% back to a full functioning liver. Listed are some of the risk factors that increase the potential for liver issues. Discussion about how diet effects the liver and what foods will help your liver function better as well as some supplements that can aid your liver if you are in a high risk lifestyle. Lastly we discussed the use of a Glucometer to gauge your individual glycemic response to different meals that you eat. Rudolph suggested that starting out with a baseline check of fasting blood glucose levels early in the morning and then following post-meal readings so that you avoid large spikes throughout the day. If you plot your results you should end up with more of a ripple than a wave throughout the day. If I sound rushed when doing this episode you're right. I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to cover both topics thoroughly in the one hour slot. Luckily I just made it fit.::

:: Beta-Alanine - Aerobic And Anaerobic Performance Enhancer - Guest: Victor Lasato - Author , Freelance Journalist and Personal Trainer :: The research on Beta-Alanine is very conclusive that it has the ability to enhance both aerobic and anaerobic work output. Lasato's article "Beta-Alanine - The Sleeper Supplement Of The Last Decade" (http://www.mindandmuscle.net/mindandmuscle/magpage.php?artID=75) piqued my interest in this amazing amino-acid. Beta-Alanine should be included in any athletes supplement regimen. Through its contribution to the increases in muscle Carnosine levels, It increases high repetition work output as well as the lower rep ranges for strength athletes. It reduces lactate buildup and thus is effective for endurance athletes such as distance runners. Lasato indicated that it was rumored to have been used by the Korean Olympic Speed Skating Team during the 2006 Olympics. Out of the 11 medals the Korean's won 10 were from Speed Skating. What we learned outside of the information covered in the article - Beta-Alanine may hold value for diabetics since it has the ability to increase the buffering of lactate and most diabetics suffer from lactic acidosis when performing physical activities. It also converts to ace
