The Three Big Lifts Part 2: -  Respect The Dead - The Deadlift

Guest:  Wade Johnson, Powerlifting Coach and Competitor

This episode is a continuation of a previous interview with Wade Johnson. We covered the Bench Press in the previous interview and how to maximize strength and break plateaus (if you missed it check the May 13th episode and archive).

Now we'll cover the Deadlift. In my opinion the most difficult and yet the most beneficial of all three lifts when it comes to building overall strength and power.

The Deadlift requires total body strength. Proper execution requires the legs, glutes, abs, back, traps, chest, shoulder girdle and arms right down to the forearms all work together in order to complete the lift.

On this episode of Super Human Radio we will discuss proper execution as well how to increase your strength and break the plateau on your top lift.

Wade Johnson

A motivating coach and serious powerlifting contender, Wade Johnson at age 40 continues to be a force in the powerlifting world. Wade writes for numerous magazines and websites including Powermag, Monster Muscle and Powerlifting USA and has an exploding business as a mentor and coach for folks just entering powerlifting and for lifters wanting to move to the next level in training. Expanding his horizons, Wade is launching his Ogre-Wear clothing line and competing in his first Olympic lifting meet in May 2006. He also runs the weightlifting discussion website at www.weightliftingdiscussion.com.

As a competitive powerlifter for 10 years, Wade claimed the WPA World Championships 3 times, the NASA World Cup once and the WNPF worlds twice. With wins at numerous national, regional and state level meets, Wade has both past and current hold records from the state level to world level.

Wade competed and won the first Music City Strongman contest held in Nashville, TN in 2003. Afterwards, he started coaching and promoting/directing meets in 1999. Wade coached the Vanderbilt Powerlifting Club and has coached or assisted numerous lifters in strength sports. As the APA state chair since 2000, he also became the Southeast regional chair in 2004.

Wade's training philosophy is based on consistency and on what can be achieved from each session. Wade states that “not every session is going to have heaving a new personal record set of reps with some massive weight. Get 100% of the whatever you have on a given day. Over the long haul, that's what is going to get you where you want to go with less damage along the way.”

Wade's best official lifts in Powerlifting:
Squat: 915
Bench press: 640
Deadlift: 655

"I believe in what I do and how I train and coach. I believe I make a difference and, I believe that effort encourages and teaches my pupils to make a difference for themselves and to pass it forward."
