Dear Congressman:
When considering Food Safety legislation pending in Congress please know
that "one size does not fit all." Both H.R. 2749 and S.510 fail to take
into account the emergence of vibrant and healthy local food systems across
the nation. Both will burden, and potentially crush, emerging new
businesses that are re-building a local food economy. I urge you not
to vote for either bill without significant amendments to address
the many problems they pose for small farms and local food processors.
Food safety is a priority shared by all. The growing trend toward locally
sourced vegetables, fruit, meats, dairy, and value-added products
improves food safety by providing the opportunity for consumers to
know their farmers and processors, to choose products on the basis of that
relationship, and to readily trace any problems should they occur. The food
safety problems in the industrial food system, with its long, multi-sourced
food supply chains that extend across thousands of miles and even
international borders, can and should be addressed without harming the
local food systems.
In addition to burdening small farmers and food processors, both bills
reference harmonizing with international standards and Codex. Codex, with
its unnecessary restrictions on natural supplements, has no place in any
U.S. law.
As a constituent, I urge you to work for amendments to remove the references
to Codex and to exempt small farms and local food processors from HR 2749, S
510, or any other food safety legislation.
