Bottled Water Gets Banged For Plastic In Landfills But Sugary Drinks Seem To Be Ignored
| News |
Alisa pointed out an article to me this morning bashing bottled water.. and after a little research I found that.. Kevin Spear writes for the Orlando Sentinel and seems to specialize in coverage about bottled water. At first glance one would have to suspect why he seems to zero in on bottled water contributing to landfills yet ignores the total plastic contribution of sugary drinks like soda and the like. It's estimated that Americans use 2,500,000 plastic bottles every hour! Approximately 5.6 Billion of those are two-liter soda bottles. Even more are small single serving soda bottles.
The reason water gets a bad wrap is there is an alternative to bottled water.. tap water. But who is crazy enough to drink tap water in this day and age? Critics say "you need to drink tap water to help save the Earth and contribute less plastic to landfills" and I say.. if there is any reason worthy of adding plastic to the landfills.. its bottled water and NOT soda.
Clearly from the rate of obesity in the US.. more people are drinking soda than water so its safe to assume the contribution of plastic from bottled water is dwarfed by the contribution of plastic from ALL sugary drinks.
Those who claim to be "Green" should decry the soda consumption in the US FIRST. It will help the planet and its people.
Confidence in public water supplies have diminished and rightfully so. Municipal water treatment is tantamount to running our water through a screen and expecting to make it drink-worthy. Consider to the shear number of microscopic against that are make their way into the water supply and ignored by Municipal treatment. When remnants of pharmaceutical drugs, that are expelled in urine were found in Minicipal water made the news a few years ago, Municipal treatment advocates said we shouldn't worry because they were in such small amounts, Imagine this attitude applied to any other area of your life. Imagine each day a few dollars seemed to go missing from your bank account and your banker said "hey its only a small amount.. don't worry about it". The fact that these agenst are in our water is evidence that Municipal watwer treatment has failed. These agents are known to be biologically harmful and we should not settle for "small amounts" making us fgeel better. And the additives that Municipal water treatment plants add to the water to make it "safe" to drink are equally harmful.
If Municipal water treatment plants want us to abandon plastic-clad water they should first invest in treatment methods that make the water they deliver pristine and truly safe. Then prove to us that its working and we would pay more for the ultimate convenience of tap water. The dollars we spend on bottled water could go to them! But The truth is water treatment methods haven't changed for a hundred years.. so like many businesses who fail to deliver socially conscious products.. they will end up going by the wayside.. all the while kicking and screaming foul for the public not being willing to sacrifice our health to support publicly owned systems.. that fail.
